KW Kids’ Bike Drive

Wanted: Bikes for older children (24-inch wheels)

We plan to refurbish these bikes and give them to children in our cycling education program who cannot otherwise get a bike. We want everyone to be able to participate. In the past year we gave away 188 bikes. We need to replenish our supplies of bikes to refurbish.

Cycling Into The Future is a local non-profit cycling education group. We deliver comprehensive bike training for children in Grade 5 and 6. Since beginning this program, we have trained almost 4500 students to ride safely and intelligently on neighbourhood streets. Our training includes hour-long sessions in each of the following areas: rules & safety, learning how to repair a tire, bike tune-ups by mechanics, rodeo riding, on-road training and assessment.

-Background Information-

Cycling Into The Future is a visionary cycling education program developed right here in the Waterloo Region. At a time when many lament the lack of cycling education and skill on the road, Cycling Into The Future has been delivering a bike training program that is the envy of communities across Ontario.

Part of our success is due to a “Covenant of Inclusion” that takes away barriers to student participation. We give bikes and helmets to kids who can’t otherwise get them, we adapt our program to meet special needs of students, and we even teach kids how to ride for the very first time.
