FREEDOM: A MIXTAPE – LIVE AND UNPLUGGED

Saturday, February 17th at 7:30 PM

The Registry Theatre, Kitchener

What started out as an audio mix tape has grown into a multi-disciplinary, immersive and thought-provoking theatre experience, and one that is completely based on the work of Black artists. Enter the bold world of Freedom: A Mixtape — Live and Unplugged where artists fearlessly confront societal norms with unfiltered stories, songs, and spoken word.

Made possible through support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Council for the Arts, the immersive journey will invite audiences into stories that resonate with the raw, unfiltered experiences of navigating an unjust world—something we can all relate to in this day and age.

Led by b current Performing Arts, Freedom’s ensemble of actors and live band breathe life into this community conversation about joy, ancestral healing and generational trauma. The piece also dives into topics of police brutality, the complexities of Black identity, and the human right to be free.

While the piece focuses on Black identities, the themes of art as resistance and systemic issues reach far beyond this diverse community. Executive Director of b current Kira Allen says that “the genuine authenticity and emotional range of this piece are how it transcends the racial and cultural backgrounds of the audience”.
